Health Ministry Extends Deadline for Dialysis Machine Supply Proposals to September 16

The Ministry of Health has announced an extension to the submission deadline for proposals to supply and install dialysis machines in selected hospitals across Ghana. Initially advertised in the Ghanaian Times on September 4, the call invited suppliers, vendors, and organisations with proven capacity to provide the machines to submit their bids. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader plan to

Honorable Kwabena Akandoh

expand dialysis care nationwide and improve access for patients living with kidney disease.

In a notice issued on Monday, September 8, the Ministry confirmed that the closing date for submissions has been moved from the original deadline to Tuesday, September 16, 2025. “Please take note that the closing date has been extended to Tuesday, 16th September, 2025,” the statement read in part. The Ministry explained that interested firms are required to present detailed technical specifications of the machines they intend to supply, demonstrate prior experience in delivering similar equipment, outline after-sales service plans, and provide a comprehensive cost breakdown that includes consumables.

The extension comes at a time when Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has reiterated the government’s commitment to significantly increasing the availability of dialysis services. Speaking in an interview with Accra-based 3FM on August 4, the Minister revealed that more than 1,000 dialysis machines will soon be distributed across the country. He indicated that the nationwide installation process is expected to begin within the next three months, a move aimed at easing the financial and logistical burden faced by kidney patients who often have to travel long distances or pay high fees for treatment.

The procurement process is seen as a critical step in addressing the growing demand for dialysis in Ghana, where the prevalence of chronic kidney disease has been rising. Many public hospitals currently operate with limited dialysis capacity, leading to long waiting times and, in some cases, the inability to accommodate all patients in need. By expanding the number of machines and strategically placing them in hospitals across the country, the Ministry hopes to improve both access and quality of care.

Vendors responding to the call will be expected not only to supply and install the machines but also to ensure that they meet international standards for safety and efficiency. The requirement for after-sales service plans reflects the Ministry’s intention to maintain the equipment in optimal condition, thereby avoiding the frequent breakdowns that have plagued some facilities in the past.

With the new September 16 deadline, suppliers have had additional time to prepare competitive and comprehensive proposals. The Ministry’s decision to extend the submission period is likely to encourage broader participation from both local and international vendors, potentially increasing the quality and range of bids received.

If successfully implemented, the project could mark a significant improvement in Ghana’s renal care infrastructure, reducing the strain on existing facilities and offering relief to patients who currently face limited treatment options. As the procurement process moves forward, attention will turn to the selection of suppliers and the speed with which the promised installations can be completed.
