On June 23, 2025, the University of Ghana’s Health Services Directorate issued a public alert in response to a resurgence of COVID-19 cases on its Legon campus. The notice, published on Graphic Online, urged students, staff, and visitors to exercise heightened caution amid reports of both suspected and confirmed infections.
In a decisive move, the Directorate reactivated its COVID-19 Response Protocols, including screening and triage at campus health facilities. The statement emphasized the importance of early detection and medical intervention, advising individuals to stay home if they experience flu-like symptoms. To curb further spread, the university outlined a series of preventive measures: The usage of face masks in enclosed or crowded spaces,

regular handwashing or use of alcohol-based sanitizers, maintenance of at least one metre of physical distance, creation of proper ventilation in offices and lecture halls and the avoidance of large gatherings where possible.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular
updates” the Directorate assured, signaling a proactive stance in managing the outbreak. University authorities stressed the need for collective responsibility, urging all members of the campus community to cooperate with health personnel and adhere strictly to safety protocols.
“Anyone experiencing symptoms or seeking more information is advised to contact the University Hospital at Legon” the notice added. This resurgence comes as global health officials continue to track new variants of the virus, with institutions worldwide being reminded not to let down their guard.
The University of Ghana’s response reflects a broader trend in pandemic management: the need for institutional agility and public health readiness even in the post-emergency phase of COVID-19. By swiftly reinstating protocols and emphasizing behavioral measures, the university is reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding academic continuity and community well-being.
