\n\t\t\t\tVaccinating 1.9 million girls is good. But for us, it is not good enough. Our policy is to reach every child. Even if it is just three girls left, we want to reach them. Ghana has taken a bold step in safeguarding the health of its young population, successfully vaccinating <\/span>1.9 million girls against Human Papillomavirus (HPV)<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>during a nationwide campaign in October 2025. The initiative, led by the <\/span>Ghana Health Service (GHS)<\/span>, marks a historic milestone in the country\u2019s battle against cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of death among women in Ghana. Yet, the mission is far from complete, as <\/span>nearly<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>300,000 girls remain unvaccinated<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0and at risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Dr Kusuati’s statement <\/span>reinforces<\/span>\u00a0Ghana\u2019s unwavering commitment to universal health coverage and epidemic preparedness. The HPV vaccine, now integrated into routine immunization services, is available at all public health facilities nationwide, ensuring that <\/span>protection against cervical cancer becomes a permanent fixture in Ghana\u2019s healthcare system.<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>

The campaign specifically targeted girls aged <\/span><\/i><\/b>nine to 14 years<\/span><\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0the most vulnerable group for HPV infection. According to Dr. Kutsuati, while mass campaigns often achieve rapid uptake, routine immunization tends to slow afterward.\u00a0<\/span>To close this gap, <\/span>the GHS is intensifying <\/span><\/i><\/b>school health outreach programmes<\/span><\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0prioritizing institutions that were missed during the October campaign. District health teams are leveraging <\/span>data and geospatial analysis<\/span>\u00a0to identify underserved areas, ensuring that no eligible girl is left behind.<\/span><\/p>

Parental resistance, fueled by misinformation, remains a significant challenge. Dr. Kutsuati acknowledged this barrier, noting: <\/span>\u201cWe are still engaging parents. PTAs are crucial platforms that bring parents, teachers and health workers together, and we have encouraged districts to make full use of them.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>By engaging <\/span>Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs)<\/span>\u00a0and community-based activities, the GHS is working to build trust and dispel myths surrounding the vaccine. The stakes are high. <\/span>Cervical cancer is the <\/span><\/i><\/b>second most common cancer among women in Ghana<\/span><\/i><\/b>, with approximately <\/span><\/i><\/b>3,072 new cases and 1,815 deaths annually<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2014equating to <\/span><\/i><\/b>5\u20138 deaths per day<\/span><\/i><\/b>, <\/span><\/i><\/b>often due to late-stage diagnosis. <\/span>A single dose of the <\/span><\/i><\/b>Gardasil 4 HPV vaccine<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0provides lifelong protection,<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0making early vaccination a critical intervention. <\/span><\/p>

Dr. Kutsuati expressed optimism that the remaining 300,000 girls would be reached within the year: <\/span>\u201cSo far, so good, but it could be better. And what will make it better is simple \u2014 let\u2019s get our girls vaccinated.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>Beyond the immediate campaign, there is growing demand from adults who wish to be vaccinated but face prohibitive costs in the private sector.
