The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have officially launched the <\/span>Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network (SBN)<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0in Accra, a landmark initiative aimed at <\/span>harnessing private-sector engagement to reduce malnutrition<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0across Ghana. This collaboration builds upon Ghana\u2019s membership in the global SUN Movement since 2011, where the NDPC has served as the national coordinating institution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

partners<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the SBN seeks to align business interests with the country\u2019s nutrition objectives, thereby accelerating progress on sustainable food systems and improved dietary outcomes for vulnerable populations.<\/span><\/p>

The genesis of the SBN reflects recognition by both public and private actors that\u00a0<\/span>malnutrition is not solely a health sector concern but a cross-cutting development challenge.<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0In Ghana, persistent micronutrient deficiencies and under-five stunting rates underscore\u00a0<\/span>the need for innovative approaches that extend beyond traditional nutrition programs.<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Against this backdrop, the NDPC and WFP designed SBN to mobilize businesses to invest in products, services, and operations that enhance nutritional value, while ensuring commercial viability and social impact. The initiative anticipates that by leveraging the private sector\u2019s market reach and resources, it can\u00a0<\/span>catalyze scalable solutions<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u00a0to address both undernutrition and the\u00a0<\/span>emerging double burden of diet-related noncommunicable diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Central to the SBN\u2019s operational strategy is <\/span>the establishment of a Cross-Sectoral Planning Group (CSPG)<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0for food systems and nutrition security, which will serve as the platform for stakeholder coordination. The CSPG brings together networks representing development partners, civil society, and academia, creating a structured forum for joint planning, resource mobilization, and policy dialogue.<\/span><\/p>

Through this mechanism, the SBN <\/span>aims to support businesses in integrating national nutrition priorities into their core activities,<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>fostering healthier value chains, and strengthening linkages between producers, processors, and consumers.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>

By embedding nutrition considerations within private-sector<\/span> investment and operations, the SBN <\/span>aims to catalyze a paradigm shift <\/span><\/i><\/span>in how food systems are governed and financed. <\/span>Success will be measured not only by reductions in malnutrition indicators <\/span>but also by increased availability<\/span><\/i><\/b> of fortified foods, stronger public-private partnerships, and enhanced regulatory frameworks that incentivize nutritious product innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the NDPC and WFP plan <\/span>to scale up the SBN\u2019s activities through targeted capacity-building workshops, market facilitation events, and outcome-driven pilot projects <\/span><\/i><\/b>across key agricultural value chains.
